What is New Year of Hope ?

New Year of Hope is the "heart child" of Twitter's @blogomomma and @spreadingJoy joining forces to reach out to those in need through the power of social media. 

A new age digital ministry raising funds for basic housing or basic needs, providing coaching and encouragement for a self help approach to an improved lifestyle, making connections for vital resources, and sometimes just a shoulder to lean on.  Our approach is to impact and change a life so that each recipient can be a blessing to the next.  Building a community of paying it forward one person at a time.  

New Year Of Hope launched only 45 short days ago in a campaign to make a difference in the new year.   Our current campaign recipient is a divorced father of one, hearing impaired, who was facing eviction right at the new year.  Literally the face of today's working poor.  You can read more under "Is it a Wonderful Life?".

Through the efforts of Marie Wikle of Spreading Joy Corp a (501(c)(3) nonprofit ) (@spreadingJoy on Twitter) she was able to negotiate terms that would allow us to campaign to cover the debt in exchange for reversing the eviction.  Exciting!

In collaboration with Spreading Joy Corp, #NYOH was launched one week ago today and I am pleased to report that as of this morning we have donations totaling $ 1651.00 !!!  THAT is awesome!!!!!!!!!!  Words cannot express our sincere thanks and gratitude for your continued support.

We are on the cusp of the New Year - WHAT a way to ring in 2010 with the birth of #NYOH !!!  God is really moving on this new ministry and I'm super excited to report some GREAT news!

#NYOH liaison and co-collaborator, Marie Wikle  (founder of Spreading Joy Corp) - spoke with Dwayne's landlord.  Remember!  This eviction was to take place Jan 1 !

Marie was able to negotiate a gift of time.  He agreed to let Dwayne stay, on the condition that we continue to raise the funds needed.  In addition Marie was able to negotiate a small reduction in the monthly rent!  YES!  This was a major victory as #NYOH is about a hand up and Spreading Joy.  Giving someone a chance to rise above their current situation.  It gets better!  Because an anonymous miracle donor gave $1000, Marie will be able to process an initial good faith payment to the landlord to solidify the negotiation!  We love us some Marie Wikle!!  Thank you VERY VERY much to that precious soul for the gift !

That was an extraordinary gift but we recognize not everyone can do that. We are THANKFUL for EVERY gift of time, money, and talent.  We're glad to have you ALL on the #NYOH team!

I am pleased to announce that as of this morning #NYOH had reached 206,346 people via 202 tweets!  So far @cupcakes5 is kickin' butt and taking numbers!

I am also pleased to announce that we are off to a good start  - we do have some anonymous donations rolling in.  THANK YOU whoever you are!

#NYOH would like to reiterate that all funds are being collected through a U.S.A registered charity orgnization a.k.a Spreading Joy Corporation. Marie Wikle (http://twitter.com/spreadyJoy) has posted her organizations certificate and answers to anticipated questions on the #NYOH FAQ event page.

As founder of Spreading Joy Corp, Marie has been in contact with the recipients landlord to verify the amounts required and to act as laision to bide time for this campaign to prosper.  He has been gracious in cooperating with our plea!   We need to raise $3400 to keep this family in their home.  The funds will be made by check directly to the landlord less any paypal fees.

I heard a story today about a group of women in a Bible study trying to find the meaning in the parable of Jesus found in Malachi 3:3.  It reads in part: He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver; He will purify the Levites and refine them like gold and silver.  As I did my research for this post, I found the story is somewhat of an urban legend.  It was so poignant and relevant that I thought it was still worth sharing and I hope it blesses you!

The women in this Bible study wondered how the verse related to the character and nature of God.  One of the women decided she would research the process of refining silver.  The next week, she found a silversmith who agreed to allow her to observe his work.  He never asked why.

The day had come. The woman carefully watched the silversmith as he held a piece of silver over the fire.   He demonstrated and explained that it was important to hold the silver right in the middle of the fire, where the flames were hottest, as to burn away all the impurities.

The woman thought about the Bible study.  Then she asked if he had to sit there in front of the fire the whole time the silver was being refined.  The man answered yes; not only did he have to sit there, but he had to keep his eyes on the silver the entire time it was in the fire.  If the silver was left in the flames a moment to long, it could be destroyed.

The woman was silent.  Then she asked the silversmith how he would know when the silver was fully refined.  He smiled and said, "oh, that's easy - when I see my image in it".

Are you feeling the heat?  Are you feeling refined?  Are you feeling God?

Everyone knows my affinity for reality television -I'm a Real Housewives monger.  Through weeks of 60 minute increments of guilty pleasure, I have heard these girls whine and complain about their version of the recession, their money issues, their downsizing, their princess problems!  Of course, every situation is relative.

Tonite a friend reached out to me, for no other reason than to get my opinion.  What I found was the real face of recession, the real struggle, a real person behind the numbers on the news.  A man with integrity and pride and needing to swallow it in order to survive.  It reminded of the scripture of Matthew 25:40 - The King will reply, 'I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.'

I frequently roll down my window and give to the people on the corners with the signs.  One day, I saw a pregnant homeless woman who was hungry.  I walked by her, straight to subway and bought some food.  It took me an hour of traveling through the projects to find her.  This is NOT that.  This person is a friend among us struggling, hurting, trying.

I pledge through Christmas and in the spirit of Christmas to do my best to help my "friend" through these trying times, with the power of our Twitter community.  Not only because he is my friend, but because this could be any one of us.  Do unto others......  open your hearts, open your minds, and open your hands.  You can't receive your blessing with a closed fist!  WWJD !!

I am no Sandra Lee ,my clothes NEVER match my table or kitchen! I do however, have fun and fresh suggestions that I've used for food settings or tablescapes. Fruit!

The only image I could find is this country setting.  I've used this idea with green apples, and fewer of them for a more modern look.  Fresh and chic!  Make sure the apples sit flat, core the top center, and insert (unscented) tapers.  This also works well with tealights.  The cut has to be bigger around than what a core untensil can do, but not as deep.  You don't want to more than, countersink the tealight.

The image below is a version of what I saw on Southern Living.  For my halloween food setting I used a small baking pumpkin, carved out all the insides, layered it with wax paper and filled it with dip.  It was a huge hit!  I'll be using it again for Thanksgiving!

The candles below are beautifully made and look so real!  Line them up on a long tray with some fall foliage; fabuuuulous!  They're a little pricey so wait till the last minute to light them!
